1. Choose your widthCast on 24 stitches using a comfortable cast-on method. With many medium-weight yarns this makes a relatively narrow scarf; adjust if you want it wider.

2. Knit the first rowKnit every stitch across the row. Count your stitches so you end with the same 24 you cast on.

3. Turn and repeatTurn your work and knit every stitch on the next row. Keep knitting every row to form garter stitch.

4. Work to a comfortable lengthContinue until the scarf reaches the length you prefer, checking occasionally with a tape measure. A longer scarf needs more yarn and more time.

5. Bind off and finishBind off loosely using a basic knitwise bind-off, cut the yarn, and weave in both ends using a tapestry needle.
